Wolves star Joao Gomes is continuing to be linked with a move to Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window. United have been heavily linked with going back into the market for a midfielder since this summer.

Ruben Amorim made five new additions to his first-team squad at United this summer - with the majority seeing the club strengthen their forward line. Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were snapped-up by United, as were goalkeeper Senne Lammens and left-back Diego Leon.

When it comes to midfielders, Gomes is one of the latest names to be mentioned as a possible target for United.

The Brazilian is reported to be valued at around £44million by the Molineux outfit, who have new manager Rob Edwards at the helm following the departure of Vitor Pereira.

It remains to be seen if United will go into the market to try and sign Gomes in January. But if they do, the Reds could have the ideal welcome gift already lined up.

Gomes currently wears the No.8 for Wolves, but it's currently unavailable at United and occupied by club captain Bruno Fernandes.

United do have No.14 available, which has been vacant since Christian Eriksen left the club as a free agent.

There are also the numbers 17, 20 and 21 available at United ahead of the January transfer window, should they decide to try and sign Gomes.

Soon after becoming Wolves manager, Edwards was asked about the rumours centred around Gomes' future at the club and the possibility of a move to Old Trafford.

"We've spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised," Edwards said last week before his first match as Wolves manager.

"We have got some good players - and there will always be interest - but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week."

Gomes is not the only midfielder to be linked with a move to United over the last few months.

The Brazil international joins Brighton star Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton in being mentioned as a potential target for United.
