Wolves star Joao Gomes is being linked with a switch to Manchester United in the upcoming January transfer window. The Red Devils have been rumoured to be searching for a new midfielder since this summer.

Ruben Amorim strengthened his first-team squad at United this summer with five new signings - most of them boosting their attacking line-up. Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were each snapped up by United, along with goalkeeper Senne Lammens and left-back Diego Leon.

As for midfielders, Gomes is one of the latest names to be thrown into the mix as a potential target for United.

The Brazilian is believed to be valued at around £44million by Wolves, who recently appointed Rob Edwards as manager. That was on the back of Vitor Pereira's exit from the Midlands club.

Whether United will dip into the market to try and secure Gomes in January remains to be seen. However, if they do, they might already have the perfect welcome gift lined up.

Gomes currently wears No.8 for Wolves. But that number is taken at United by club captain Bruno Fernandes.

United do have the No.14 shirt available, which has been vacant since Christian Eriksen departed the club as a free agent this summer. Additionally, the numbers 17, 20 and 21 are also up for grabs at United, during January's transfer window, should they decide to make a move for Gomes.

Upon taking the reins at Wolves, Edwards was quizzed about the swirling rumours regarding Gomes' future and a potential move to Old Trafford. "We've spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised," Edwards said last week ahead of his managerial debut for Wolves.

"We have got some good players, and there will always be interest, but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week."

Gomes isn't the only midfielder whose name has been thrown into the hat for a possible United switch in recent months. The Brazilian international joins Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton on the list of potential targets for United.
