Manchester United haven’t been short of money when it comes to strengthening the squad but there is one signing that they need to make.

Manchester United have made a series of poor decisions in the transfer market since Sir Alex Ferguson retired but one surely sticks out more than the rest.

The failure to sign Harry Kane when he was at Tottenham Hotspur is one that would have been unthinkable during the legendary boss’ tenure who regularly cherry picked the best from the Premier League. The England captain’s ability to find the back of the net has barely wavered since he first broke into the Spurs starting XI and he continues to break records long into his 30s.

Harry Kane breaks silence on possible return to England

Only Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe can really claim to be on the same level as Kane and when the money spent on players like Paul Pogba, Antony, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho is considered, why it wasn’t spent on England’s greatest ever goalscorer will forever remain a mystery.

Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich’s trip to England to face Arsenal in the Premier League Kane was asked about the £57m release clause in his contract and if a summer return is on the cards amid interest from United: “No, I don’t think so. I haven’t had any contact with anyone, nobody has contacted me,” Kane said via talkSPORT. “I feel very comfortable in the current situation, even though we haven’t yet discussed my situation with Bayern. There’s no rush. I’m really happy in Munich. You can see that in the way I’m playing.

“If there’s contact, then we’ll see. But I’m not thinking about the new season yet. First up is the World Cup in the summer. And it’s very unlikely that anything will change after this season.”

Kane has spoken about extending his stay at Bayern, however, the prospect of breaking the all-time Premier League goalscoring record now that he has won trophies in Germany, might be too much to turn down.

Should United make Harry Kane move?

Even at 32-years old, United should be doing all that they can to sign Harry Kane. He would immediately aleviate some of the pressure off players like Bruno Fernandes and provide the sort of fire power that would allow other areas of the park to be upgraded too. It would also give Sesko the chance to learn from one of the best goalscorers that European football has ever seen.

Ideally, it would be nice if the rift between Marcus Rashford, Amorim and the club could be healed and pair the international colleagues alongside Bryan Mbeumo in what would be a mouthwatering prospect, however, that might be a stretch too far. That so many English clubs signed strikers in the summer and not one of them took advantage of Kane’s release clause that was lower than the fees paid for Sesko, Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, Hugo Ekitike and Nick Woltemade will never not make sense and United should have learned their lesson.
