£35m star now'wants transfer'to Man Utd, views as'major'step in career - report

Manchester United are likely to bolster their midfield department in 2026.

The Red Devils were linked with plenty of midfielders last summer, but could not secure a suitable deal.

United could explore the transfer market next year, and Gazeta do Urubu claim that the club are monitoring the situation of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes.

However, the Mancunian giants have made no contact with Wolves regarding the player.

The Red Devils are keen on landing two central midfielders in 2026. If the hierarchy were to sign just one player, the focus could turn to pursuing a more-attack minded profile instead.

Gomes reportedly wants a transfer to the Red Devils and considers the club a ‘major’ step forward. For now, United are keeping tabs on him and have not made any sort of approach.

Gomes could be a backup midfield target

The Red Devils have earmarked Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson as their priority target next summer. The Englishman could cost a staggering fee of £100 million, as per The Times

Alongside him, the club have their sights on landing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba. It appears United are not convinced about paying £100m for the Cameroonian star.

Baleba has experienced a significant dip in form during the ongoing campaign, and the Red Devils may seek a discount on the asking price to secure his services at the end of the season.

If not, they could turn their attention to Gomes, who has been a key performer for Wolves in the centre of the park. He has stood out despite their struggles in the league this campaign.

The 24-year-old has won almost six duels per appearance with 4.7 recoveries, 2.6 tackles and 1.6 clearances. He has completed 85 percent of his passes for the Midlands outfit.

His statistics should only improve with a more possession-based outfit like United. He has a Transfermarkt value of £35 million.

United could prise him away for such a fee, with Wolves looking more likely to be relegated. They are already nine points adrift of safety after just 12 games into the campaign.
