Man Utd starlet handed his debut by Louis van Gaal set for transfer to crisis club

Former Manchester United ace Timothy Fosu-Mensah is reportedly on the radar of Sheffield Wednesday. The 27-year-old has been without a club since parting ways with Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2024, with current Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso believed to have played a part in the decision to cut his contract short.

Fosu-Mensah made the switch to the German outfit in a £1.8million deal during the January transfer window of 2021 after spending five years at Old Trafford. Despite suffering serious knee and hamstring injuries that limited him to just 30 appearances over three-and-a-half years, he was part of the squad that clinched an historic Bundesliga title.

The Star reports that despite not having played competitively since April 2023, Fosu-Mensah is being eyed by Sheffield Wednesday. The Championship strugglers are staring down the barrel of relegation to League One following a 12-point deduction.

However, the Owls are pulling out all the stops to avoid dropping into England's third tier next season, as evidenced by their interest in a player of Fosu-Mensah's calibre. Among those who have stood out this season at Hillsborough is United loanee Harry Amass.

Fosu-Mensah was given his first taste of senior football at United by Louis van Gaal on the same day Marcus Rashford made his debut. He went on to feature 30 times for the first team, with 11 of those appearances coming under Jose Mourinho.

The right-back has heaped praise on the Portuguese manager and previously revealed how instrumental he was in his development. He told The Sun in February 2024: "I spent the full season with the first team and, as a result, completed a full pre-season with them for the first time.

"I was still a teenager when Jose Mourinho arrived, and he helped me mature into becoming a man in footballing terms. Jose was tough on young players with his demands, but in a good way, because he wanted you to be ready to represent a club the size of Manchester United."

On his decision to leave United, Fosu-Mensah said: "It was my decision. The manager was good to me but at the end, I was not playing a lot. When you are 22, 23, or 24 years old you need to be playing. "I didn't play much and I wanted to. It was the best decision in the end to go somewhere else where I would get more minutes."
