Former Manchester United ace Timothy Fosu-Mensah is reportedly on the radar of Sheffield Wednesday. The 27-year-old has been without a club since parting ways with Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2024, with current Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso believed to have played a part in his early contract termination.

Fosu-Mensah made the switch to the German outfit in a £1.8million move during the January transfer window of 2021 after spending five years at Old Trafford. Despite suffering serious knee and hamstring injuries that limited him to just 30 appearances over three-and-a-half years, he was part of their historic Bundesliga title triumph.

Even though he hasn't played competitively since April 2023, the Star suggests that Sheffield Wednesday are considering bringing Fosu-Mensah on board. The Championship's bottom club is staring down the barrel of relegation to League One following a 12-point deduction.

However, the Owls seem determined to stave off dropping into England's third tier next season, as evidenced by their interest in a player of Fosu-Mensah's calibre. Among those impressing at Hillsborough this season is United loanee Harry Amass, despite Sheffield Wednesday managing just a single win.

Fosu-Mensah was given his first taste of senior team action at United by Louis van Gaal on the same day Marcus Rashford made his debut. He went on to make 30 first-team appearances, with 11 of those coming under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho.

The right-back has been singing praises for the Portuguese manager, revealing that he played a significant role in his development.

Speaking to The Sun in February 2024, he said: "I spent the full season with the first team and, as a result, completed a full pre-season with them for the first time.

"I was still a teenager when Jose Mourinho arrived, and he helped me mature into becoming a man in footballing terms.

"Jose was tough on young players with his demands, but in a good way, because he wanted you to be ready to represent a club the size of Manchester United."

However, despite Mourinho's guidance, Fosu-Mensah found it difficult to secure a regular spot at Old Trafford and decided to leave for more playing time.

Fosu-Mensah explained: "It was my decision. The manager was good to me but at the end, I was not playing a lot. When you are 22, 23, or 24 years old you need to be playing.

"I didn't play much and I wanted to. It was the best decision in the end to go somewhere else where I would get more minutes."

Sadly, he only managed to clock up just 1,050 minutes for Leverkusen, but the former United academy star is clear about his goals for the future.

In an interview with World Football Index last year, he stated: "I have had a few spells out with injury so I want to stay injury free in order to play and perform at the highest level.

"Of course, I want to win more trophies in my career but the most important thing is to be able to enjoy my football and play at the highest level of the game."
