Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United have Premier League star 'under consideration' for January move

Manchester United 0-1 Everton match review and highlights

The latest Man Utd transfer news and gossip as they look to strengthen their midfield next year.

Manchester United are interested in Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes ahead of the January transfer window. United will look to sign two midfielders next year, with at least one of them expected to be a marquee addition to the squad.

Ruben Amorim would like to sign a player with Premier League experience as he believes there is 'less risk' attached to adding someone who has already played in the English top-flight. The United head coach wants to improve the physicality and athleticism of his side and will push to sign one of the top midfielders from the division.

United appreciate it is unlikely they will be able to sign a top target during the winter window, with many clubs reluctant to part with star players midway through a campaign. If they were to make a move during January, a deal for Gomes might be the most likely due to Wolves' precarious position in the Premier League.

Romano reveals United interest in Gomes move

Joao Gomes is one of several midfielders Manchester United are interested in as they look to reinforce next year.

United appreciate it might take a club-record fee in excess of the £89m they spent on Paul Pogba if they are to add an elite midfielder to their squad next year. They remain interested in a move for Brighton ace Carlos Baleba after they enquired to sign him in the summer transfer window, while there is also interest in Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest talisman Elliot Anderson, who could both command huge fees if they shine in the World Cup with England next summer.

Wolves ace Gomes is another cheaper option who could appeal to the club and writing in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano provided a brief update on their interest. "He’s one of the names under consideration, not the only one," he wrote. "Man United have several midfielders on their shortlist."

Earlier this week, new Wolves head coach Rob Edwards was quizzed on the future of Gomes as he aims to keep his former club in the Premier League. "We've spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised," Edwards said. "We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week."
