West Brom boss confirms fresh Toby Collyer injury setback, 'it's disappointing...'

Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer suffered another injury setback playing for West Brom on Wednesday night.

A total of 18 Manchester United players were sent on loan in the summer.

Most of the players are academy prospects looking to gain experience at the senior level. Others, like Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, are looking to prove themselves to secure permanent moves away from Old Trafford.

United are considering sending three more players on loan in January, with loan manager Jonny Evans working hard to ensure that the players sent away temporarily go to the right clubs.

Of course, not all loan moves are a success. There have been examples where the players don’t get sufficient game time due to the manager’s selections or injury problems.

It seems like Toby Collyer is the latest victim of a loan move not going as planned.

Toby Collyer suffers injury against Birmingham

Collyer joined West Brom on loan at the beginning of the season and has made 12 appearances thus far.

The United loanee missed a month of action due to another injury sustained in October. That was when Collyer was forced off against Preston, shortly after half-time in a 2-1 win.

Since then, West Brom manager Ryan Mason has eased Collyer back into action, handing him two substitute appearances before last night’s draw with Birmingham.

Collyer earned his third start of the season against Birmingham, but the midfielder had to come off after 11 minutes due to a muscle injury.

Reacting to the disappointing blow at full-time, Mason told the Express And Star: “It’s a muscle injury, yes. I think it’s challenging for him, it’s disappointing.

“He had a few last season at Man United, that’s why I was very patient with him this season because I wanted to give him the best opportunity to grow into the demands of this league.

“But for something to happen after 10 minutes, it’s disappointing.

“It looks like it (a hamstring issue). We’ll assess him in the next couple of days and see where we’re at with that.”

This setback will rule Collyer out of West Brom’s next game against Swansea on Saturday and potentially longer, but everyone at United will be wishing the young midfielder a speedy recovery.

It has been a frustrating start to the season for Collyer, especially after suffering two injuries and missing out on four matches following the first setback.

Collyer will hope that he isn’t out for as many matches this time, but Mason is bound to be wary of further setbacks.

The 21-year-old has started just three times in his 12 appearances, with the latest start coming against Birmingham.

Collyer has one assist to his name, but he has yet to complete a full 90 minutes for the Baggies.
