Manchester United are reportedly planning to bolster their wing-back and midfield options next summer, but they haven't ruled out making moves in the upcoming transfer window. ESPN reports that the Red Devils will likely approach January with caution.
The club had a busy summer, welcoming six new faces to Ruben Amorim's squad, sparking rumours that more signings could be on the horizon. Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens, and Diego Leon all made the move to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, costing the club a hefty £236million.
Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Hove Albion was also heavily linked with a move to United, but a deal failed to materialise. ESPN suggests that alongside Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are among the names being considered as potential midfield targets. United have also reportedly been eyeing up moves for Wolves pair Joao Gomes and Andre, as well as Angelo Stiller and Conor Gallagher.
It's believed that United's recruitment strategy for next summer will focus on bringing in 'at least one' top-level midfielder.
Casemiro, whose contract expires in the summer, could be offered a new deal on reduced terms.
However, United may decide to sever ties and seek a long-term solution. Despite this, Manuel Ugarte has yet to prove himself as United's first-choice defensive midfielder.
While a bit of transfer activity could be on the cards in January, ESPN suggests that 'nothing has been ruled out,' but the majority of their dealings are likely to be postponed until the summer.
Next month, Amorim will have to make do without Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui due to their commitments at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Sesko is currently nursing a knee injury he picked up against Tottenham.
Meanwhile, it seems that Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, two of the club's top earners, may be heading for pastures new away from Old Trafford.
