Melker Ellborg reacts to 'flattering' Man Utd transfer links and dealing with the spotlight

Malmo goalkeeper Melker Ellborg has responded to links to Manchester United, describing them as ‘flattering’ but carefully stating his intentions for the foreseeable future.

At the start of the 2025/26 season, Ruben Amorim made some big changes to Manchester United’s goalkeeper department.

Altay Bayindir started the season as Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper before Andre Onana was sent on loan to Trabzonspor.

Then, Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp and quickly took the Turkey international’s place in the team before earning high praise from Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, United are eyeing Malmo stopper Melker Ellborg, who is impressing in the Swedish league.

That suggests Amorim has more plans to revamp the keeper department, even after settling on a new first-choice stopper in Lammens.

Melker Ellborg flattered by Man Utd interest

After spending the previous three seasons out on loan before breaking into the Malmo team, Ellborg is sharing game time with Sweden veteran Robin Olsen.

United could replace Bayindir with Ellborg because United’s second choice rarely impressed when he was given opportunities. The Red Devils looked extra vulnerable when he started games this season, especially from corners.

It’s still early days in terms of United’s scouting of Ellborg as they’ll likely keep an eye on him for the remainder of the season before making any decisions on a transfer pursuit.

The 22-year-old has kept seven clean sheets for Malmo so far.

Ellborg has spoken out about United’s interest, admitting it’s ‘flattering’ but stressing that he must focus on his performances for Malmo.

“It came a little out of nowhere, but it’s definitely fun to be on those clubs’ radar. It’s awesome,” Ellborg told Expressen.

“The deal between me and my advisors is that I get on with it and focus on my own business. They take care of the rest. I have a really bad idea, actually.

“But for now, a rumour is just a rumour. As long as there’s nothing concrete, it’s not something I’m focusing on.”

He added: “I think it works best for me to just be in the present and focus on what I’m going to do. Then, of course, it’s flattering. You see it as a carrot and a receipt that you’ve done something good.

“But I try to take it like normal matches. I don’t think I’ll become a better goalkeeper by walking around thinking about all the eyes on me.”

Who is your dream Manchester United signing in 2026?

Perhaps it would be an issue if Ellborg doesn’t like all eyes on him because that is something every United keeper must learn to deal with to succeed.

Former Man Utd star came through Malmo academy

While there are several Swedes who played for United, only one played for Malmo.

That means Ellborg could follow in the footsteps of Zlatan Ibrahimovic if he is to sign for United in the future.

Ibrahimovic is one of Malmo’s most famous youth products.

He made eight appearances for the first team, scoring three goals and registering three assists.
