Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood's goalscoring record for Marseille has seen his team-mate suggest that an England recall could be on the cards, as he continues to rebuild his career in France.

Greenwood helped the Ligue 1 side secure a Champions League victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday night, marking Greenwood's first encounter with an English side since his departure from United 16 months ago.

It was during his time at Old Trafford that the forward earned his solitary cap for the Three Lions. That came against Iceland back in September 2020.

But with his current form hard to ignore, it means going to the World Cup next summer has become a real aim.

Greenwood hasn't abandoned hope of representing England again, despite links to the Jamaican national team. His colleagues in Marseille believe he merits international recognition too.

Since joining the French side for £26.6million, the 24-year-old has netted 33 goals in 53 matches. And prior to leaving Manchester on a permanent basis, Greenwood also had a successful loan spell in Spain with Getafe.

American international Timothy Weah, son of football legend George Weah, believes Greenwood deserves a spot in the England squad and is committed to helping him.

He told The Sun: "When I speak about Mason it's a special feeling because it's very rare in a lifetime that you get to share the pitch with such an amazing player and amazing character.

"We've grown closer since I've joined the team and been here. Hopefully he gets that call-up soon.

"I'm super proud of him. He's having an amazing season and hopefully I can help him to reach those heights that he's aiming for."

Prior to Greenwood leaving United, he faced allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. All charges were ultimately dropped but were a big factor in his exit.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has an abundance of talent at his disposal, and in September, the German made clear that recalling Greenwood wasn't under consideration at the time.

"I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp," the Three Lions manager said.

"My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought.

"He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team."
