Paul Scholes on which midfielder Manchester United should sign in 2026

Last week, Scholes cast doubt over Elliot Anderson, and has been discussing the Nottingham Forest midfielder once again now, with one complaint which is applicable to all three main targets.

This week, Scholes has now been talking to Sky Sports and discussed the United midfield transfer debate between Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson.

“You’d like to see all three of them. You’d take them as a midfield, or at least two of the three. I’ll probably surprise you, Adam Wharton”, Scholes admitted when tasked with choosing just one.

Scholes then admitted that there is something he doesn’t like about any of the targets.

“But I still don’t think any of the three are Manchester United style midfield players. But they are more the style of football these days.

“If I had to choose one, I just think Wharton has more quality. It’s close between Anderson and Wharton, but I’ll just pick Wharton.”

Scholes is actually wrong about Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton

This season, Baleba has showed he might not have the mental strength to be a Manchester United player, but Anderson and Wharton are different.

What makes a United midfielder is the attitude, toughness and quality. Both English internationals have all three in an abundance.

Anderson has earned Bryan Robson comparisons for his strong season and Wharton is a model professional, which is mandatory for United.

Both are natural leaders, particularly Anderson, and being Premier League proven, young and homegrown, they are players that Sir Alex Ferguson would be all over if he was manager.

So Scholes is wrong to doubt the duo are United players, and if either join, they will prove it.
