Mason Greenwood's impressive form for Marseille has led to suggestions that an England recall could be on the horizon as he continues to rebuild his career in France. The former Manchester United striker played a key role in helping Marseille secure a Champions League victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday night, marking his first encounter with an English team since leaving Old Trafford 16 months ago. It was during his tenure at United that Greenwood earned his only cap for the Three Lions, which came against Iceland back in September 2020.
However, given his current scintillating form, the possibility of participating in next summer's World Cup has become a realistic goal. Despite rumours linking him to the Jamaica national team, Greenwood hasn't given up hope of donning the England jersey again. His team-mates at Marseille also believe he deserves another shot at international football.
Since making the £26.6million move to the French outfit, the 24-year-old has found the back of the net 33 times in 53 appearances. Before permanently leaving Manchester, Greenwood also enjoyed a successful loan stint in Spain with Getafe.
American international Timothy Weah, son of footballing legend George Weah, is convinced that Greenwood merits a place in the England squad and is committed to supporting him.
Speaking to The Sun, he said: "When I speak about Mason it's a special feeling because it's very rare in a lifetime that you get to share the pitch with such an amazing player and amazing character.
"We've grown closer since I've joined the team and been here. Hopefully he gets that call-up soon.
"I'm super proud of him. He's having an amazing season and hopefully I can help him to reach those heights that he's aiming for."
Before Greenwood's departure from United, he faced allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. These charges were eventually dropped but played a significant role in his exit.
England boss Thomas Tuchel has a wealth of talent at his fingertips, and in September, the German clarified that recalling Greenwood wasn't on the cards at that time.
"I have not spoken to him until now, I have not spoken to him or his camp," the Three Lions manager said.
"My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team."
