Paul Scholes has now dropped his two cents on the Manchester United midfield partnership between Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim has remained firm that his preferred two-man midfield pivot in his tactical system must be built around Bruno Fernandes playing alongside Casemiro.
What is Bruno Fernandes’ best position for Manchester United?
Fernandes has dropped into a deeper midfield role under Manchester United manager Amorim in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign after Matheus Cunha’s arrival.
Casemiro had a resurgence in form in the 2024-25 Premier League season and has climbed ahead of Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in the starting XI picks.
However, United have seen mixed results when Fernandes and Casemiro have partnered alongside one another over the opening months of the campaign.

“I think it [the Man Utd midfield] has got better,” he told Sky Sports.

The former Real Madrid star’s exit from the Premier League club would leave Ruben Amorim to shake up his midfield combination for the 2026-27 season.
Scholes added that he was not convinced that United could capture the Premier League title if Amorim stuck with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes for the long term.
The 51-year-old United legend continued: “Are you going to win the league with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in a central midfield partnership?
“I’m not too sure, it still seems a little bit away from that. But on the whole, the midfield has looked a little bit better.”

Paul Scholes’ assessment of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes paints the deeper picture around Man Utd’s midfield
United’s top priority in the 2026 summer transfer window is reportedly to secure a midfielder after Ineos did not bring in further reinforcements before the new season.
The Red Devils’ midfield has been incredibly susceptible to being overwhelmed by opposition Premier League teams due to the dynamic of Casemiro and Fernandes.
After his latest performances, do you want Casemiro to sign a one-year contract extension?
Fernandes’ influence has even waned at times after Amorim’s call to sacrifice his attacking midfield input for a role in the two-man midfield pivot in his system.
Casemiro is also walking on eggshells for United at the moment, with the former Real Madrid star only one booking away from a Premier League match suspension.
