David Ornstein is now hearing something different about Joao Gomes and Man Utd

Wolves star Joao Gomes has become the subject of contrasting reports since being linked with Manchester United, as reliable reporter David Ornstein reveals what he is hearing about the potential transfer.

It is no secret that Manchester United will be trying to strengthen their midfield department in 2026; however, it remains to be seen if they will wait until the summer or splash the cash in January.

United usually wait until the summer to conduct its biggest deals, but there will be extra barriers on that front in 2026 since it’s a World Cup year.

Over the past few months, United have been linked with several midfielders, many of whom would arrive with Premier League experience. They include Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Joao Gomes.

Ruben Amorim is currently opting to start Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in a double pivot, but the latter could see his contract expire at the end of the season.

The growing problems in midfield could force United’s hand to make signings midway through the season, but there is nothing concrete to suggest that will happen.

David Ornstein dismisses Joao Gomes to Man Utd links

Reports earlier today from Fabrizio Romano stressed that Gomes is ‘keen’ on a move to United, despite previously stating that he wants to play for Liverpool.

The 24-year-old has been the silver lining in a struggling Wolves side, sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with two points from 12 matches.

Matheus Cunha thinks Joao Gomes could be as good as Casemiro

“Maybe Casemiro. He is a bit older now, but I put Casemiro’s name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive.

“I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that.”

That is relegation form, and that could lead to Wolves losing key players at a reduced price in the summer, but The Athletic stresses there is no truth in reports that United are chasing the Wolves midfielder.

The report, written by David Ornstein, states that Wolves deny knowledge of interest from Old Trafford and insists talks between the clubs have not happened.

As is the case with every transfer window, United get linked with countless players, many of whom are not genuine targets.

It sounds like Gomes’ agent has been busy trying to build the profile of his talented client.

Man Utd trio face uncertain future

Casemiro isn’t the only United midfielder facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

The same applies to Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, as per The Sun.

It is understood that Fernandes has an agreement that he can leave United for an overseas team for £57 million next year if he decides to move on.

The 31-year-old remains a key figure in Amorim’s team, while Mainoo is often overlooked following a request to leave on loan at the start of the season.

Nicky Butt has advised Mainoo to think about leaving if his situation doesn’t improve this season.
