Ruben Amorim admitted he doesn't know why Manchester United have such a poor record when playing away from home in the Premier League, but said his team need to know how to "finish games". United have won just one of their previous 11 away Premier League outings. That victory came against Liverpool at Anfield last month.

Amorim's side suffered a shock defeat to Everton at the beginning of the week, and they must produce a response when they play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this weekend. United will need to find a way to improve their record on the road if they are to secure Champions League qualification.

"We need to show the players why we lost control against Nottingham, why we lost control against Tottenham, so if you look at those games, they were there to win," said Amorim. "So sometimes a small detail can change anything. I've felt the intensity at home has been higher. But against Everton, it was not on the same level.

"I think it's something we need to work on, so it's hard to point why we aren't winning away. There are a lot of issues we are improving and we need to know how to finish the games to win."

Amorim continued: "In our club, it’s the same because last year we had to win every game all the time, and we took a lot of things, a lot of criticism because we were not winning. There are no excuses. About Europe, I've already talked about Europe and I said the same thing last year when we were in Europe. And I say the same thing this year: there are advantages and disadvantages of not being in Europe, so there are no excuses last year or this year, we always have to win games."

Reacting to the Everton loss, he said: "I think if you look at the game, we can play better, we could be better and everything that happened in that game, we should have won that game, and we have to have that urgency of winning games. So we know what happens around the club if we don't win games.

"If we know that, let's do everything in the right way. But we lost that one, we cannot change that, so let's focus."

Palace use the 3-4-3 formation that Amorim is wedded to, but the United boss insisted the intricacies of the systems are different. "We play a different way and you can understand that with data," he said.

"Now it's hard to explain. They are a different club and they are doing things better than us, which is quite simple. We play in a different moment, we defend in a different space and try to attack in a different way, but they are doing things better than us."
