Manchester United once had an incredible back-up goalkeeper named Sergio Romero, and he’s probably better than any number one the club has had in years.
Sergio Romero joined Manchester United in 2015 under Louis van Gaal in a bid to provide top-level competition with David de Gea in goal.
The 2014 World Cup final losing goalkeeper had worked with the Dutchman previously at AZ Alkmaar, and what a signing he was, offering a genuine contention to the starting berth, although he never managed to claim it.
This was due to De Gea being one of the best United goalkeepers in history; otherwise, Romero probably would have been a starter.
Romero was harshly treated by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he has gone on to play for years after leaving Old Trafford, and is now back in his home nation of Argentina.
However, things have now gone a bit wrong for Romero.

Romero joined Boca Juniors in 2022, where he remained until 2025 before he left the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent in the summer as part of cost-cutting measures by Boca Juniors.
It was supposed to expire in December, but Romero fell out of favour with manager Fernando Gago, which sparked his exit.

Following this, Romero joined Argentinos in Argentina, stepping in as their first-choice goalkeeper got injured. But now, in a shock turn of events, weeks later, Romero is back on the search for a new club.
According to the Argentine outlet Bolavip, Romero doesn’t have a place in the Argentinos squad and has now been visiting other clubs’ facilities. The report notes that after just a few matches, his future is uncertain, and he has now donned the jersey of another club in public.
He visited the facilities of Los Andes, where he was presented with their home jersey, and he then wore it for a photograph with the club captain, raising questions over whether this is an indication he will join the lower league side.
What Romero’s head coach has said about the situation
Argentinos’ head coach Nicolas Diez dropped Romero after losing the final of the Copa Argentina to Independiente, opting for young Gonzalo Siri to play in his place.
Diez then explained his decision to the press in Argentina.
“These are difficult decisions. We know Chiquito’s experience. He came here to play in goal, but you have to make decisions, and I felt that Gonzalo (Siri) had to play. Sometimes you go by your gut, but I
always do what I feel, and the players know that.”
At Argentinos, Romero played just four times, failed to keep a single clean sheet and conceded six goals while also failing to save a single penalty in the Copa Argentina shootout.
Not the same player we remember from his time at United.
