Manchester United and Bristol City stars shine as Wales draw in Spain

Wales’ winless run was stretched to twelve games last night as they drew 1-1 with South Korea in Malaga.

Sophie Ingle scored the opener after six minutes, and Cymru could have scored six or seven in the first half.

The missed chances would come back and bite Wales, as Kim Min-ji headed in the South Korea equaliser midway through the second half.

Here’s how we rate the performance of every Wales player who started the game out in Malaga.

WALES PLAYER RATINGS VS. SOUTH KOREA

Olivia Clark: 6/10

Clark had to be very alert to deny South Korea twice when Wales lost the ball in the middle of the park and allowed them to counter. There were some nervy moments when Wales played the ball around the back, but overall, a decent display.

Rhiannon Roberts: 6/10

All three centre-backs had very similar games. For large parts they did not have too much to do, but the passing around the back was a little ropey. Great to see Roberts back as she does offer great leadership.

Hayley Ladd: 6/10

Ladd got back well and swept up things when South Korea broke through occasionally. Took a couple of risks with the passing, but against the teams Wales will face in the Nations League, these tactics should serve them well.

Gemma Evans: 6/10

Evans did form a good relationship with Lily Woodham down her side and the two have a very good understanding. Good physicality as ever too from Evans, but the whole defensive unit will be disappointed to concede yet another set-piece.

Ffion Morgan: 7/10

One of her better performances in a Welsh shirt. Started in a wing-back spot again, but what she did do was play inverted sometimes. Allowing her to get into the middle of the park with her pace gave Wales a different option. A solid performance. Subbed off 60th minute.

Sophie Ingle: 8/10

We could easily be talking about a ten-minute hat-trick from Ingle in the first half! The Bristol City midfielder is playing in a more advanced role than she has done before under Wilkinson, and she does add a different element when Cymru go forward.

Wales made to rue missed chances as they draw with South Korea

Angharad James: 6/10

Going forward James managed to play some really good through balls into the likes of Jones and Griffiths. She was a little slack at times and that allowed South Korea to get on the counter occasionally. Subbed off 83rd minute.

Lily Woodham: 7/10

You can tell that Woodham is good form. Good pace and good energy all night, and her deliveries from set-pieces or crosses were on point. Good to see her back in the line-up as she gives this team so much.

Mared Griffiths: 8/10

Two starts, two player of the match performances. When she dribbles it’s like she glides across the pitch. It’s mesmeric at times. Would maybe like to see her be a little braver and not be afraid to have more shots on goal.

Carrie Jones: 7/10

Started in a wide area but was given the licence to drop back into midfield when needed and to play further forward too. Jones is such a strong runner and can easily shrug off any opponent if needed. Clear to see the move to Sweden has made her a better player. Subbed off 60th minute.

Hannah Cain: 6/10

Had a couple of really nice touches and she was used more as a link player to help bring in the likes of Carrie Jones and Mared Griffiths into the final third. Would have been disappointed not to score from a couple of yards out, but she is probably now Wales’ first choice striker. Subbed off at half-time.

Elise Hughes: 6/10

Subbed on at half-time. Should have scored so soon after coming on but hit the post. Used her strength so well but played maybe a little deeper than usual. Needs to try and link up with the likes of Lily Woodham and Ffion Morgan more.

Rachel Rowe: 6/10

Subbed on 60th minute. Was difficult to tell where Rowe was playing. Sometimes it was in midfield, sometimes it was on the wing, she did cover a lot of ground. Still think her best position is on the left. Would like to see her start against Switzerland.

Ceri Holland: 6/10

Subbed on 60th minute. Shocked she didn’t start but did come on and was a threat throughout. Made good runs down the wing but also got back and defended well, especially after South Korea scored their equaliser.

Mia Ross: N/A

Subbed on 83rd minute. Not on the field long enough to make an impact, but good to see her get another appearance under her belt.

Rhian Wilkinson: 6/10

First half tactics were spot on. Pressured at the right times, and it isn’t her fault that Wales couldn’t convert good chances. Do not know what happened in the second half. Substitutes didn’t have that much of an impact either. Curious to see what she does against the Swiss.
