Ruben Amorim has admitted to feeling ‘anxiety’ every time Patrick Dorgu is on the ball for Manchester United. The Danish defender moved to Old Trafford in the January transfer window for £25m from Lecce.
He had an impressive start to life with the Red Devils but has struggled on occasion since. Giving his verdict on Dorgu’s form, United boss Amorim has said that he is trying to find a solution to help the defender perform to his true ability.
“What I feel when I see them training, they are doing so much better than in games,” Amorim said before adding: “When I see him playing for the national team, he’s scored a great goal against Scotland, the decision that he made under pressure was different to the decision that he’s making in our team.
“So I just need to understand the context in trying to help them. I think they are far from the best, and they know it. Like a lot of players in our team, like myself. I think they have so much more to give. Let’s see this week if we improve that.”
Amorim also admitted that he can feel tangible anxiety every time Dorgu receives the ball - but hopes to see him become more comfortable. He said: “He needs to be calmer playing the game. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touched the ball — I can feel it, the anxiety.
“And I remember the shot [missed] against Everton. That was easier than the decision that he had to make when the guys from Scotland were there, when he made a great decision.
“And I saw it when he played in Italy. But, again, here is different and sometimes the pressure is hard for them in the beginning, but he has time to improve.”
Dorgu has so far made 32 appearances in all competitions for United. He will be aiming to prove Amorim wrong this weekend as the Red Devils take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The defender will have to be on his best behaviour should he take to the pitch. Dorgu is just one yellow card away from a one-match Premier League suspension.
Should he be booked against Palace, then he will miss Thursday evening’s trip to West Ham United. He could also be in line for an awkward conversation with his boss, Amorim.
A post on Instagram criticising the Portuguese coach’s selection decisions read: "Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro CANNOT play together.” It appeared that Dorgu’s account had liked that particular post.
