Manchester United have become the first Premier League team to suffer from a key rule change implemented ahead of the 2025-26 season. Jean-Philippe Mateta gave the Eagles the lead in controversial circumstances on Sunday lunchtime at Selhurst Park.
Mateta was fouled by Leny Yoro and the referee pointed to the spot during the first half. Mateta scuffed his penalty into the bottom corner and the whole ground thought Palace had the lead.
But VAR spotted Mateta had actually struck the ball into his standing foot before it bobbled into the goal. Before the start of this season, that would have resulted in an indirect free-kick to United.
However, owing to a rule change before the current campaign, players are allowed to retake as long as their first effort went in the net.
Because Mateta scored, he was allowed to retake the spot kick, and successfully swept it into the opposite corner to eventually give Palace the lead.
