BREAKING Crystal Palace forced to retake penalty due to VAR ruling after'clumsy'Man Utd foul

Jean-Philippe Mateta had to retake his penalty to give Crystal Palace the lead against Manchester United.

The in-form French striker put the Eagles ahead against United after 36 minutes when referee Rob Jones pointed to the spot following Leny Yoro's clumsy trip on Mateta in the box, with no doubt about the validity of the decision.

Mateta then stepped up and rolled his effort into the bottom left corner, sending Senne Lammens the wrong way.

Mateta's penalty struck his standing foot

However, after he had run off to kick the corner flag in his customary celebration, VAR spotted that Mateta had kicked the ball against his standing foot, seeing the ball bobble into the goal.

Following a review, Jones announced the decision that Mateta would have to retake the penalty to the fury of United defender Matthijs de Ligt, who was seemingly unaware that the law had changed regarding double-touch penalties before the start of the season.

Mateta coolly stepped up again and rolled his second effort to Lammens' right, sending the Belgian the wrong way again.

In August, it was announced that the rules on double-touch penalties had changed to allow accidental occurrences to be retaken if the kick was successful.

Mateta's second effort was without controversy

Previously, when such kicks happened, an indirect free-kick would be given to the defending team during a match. It would also be recorded as a missed penalty if it happened during a penalty shootout.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) updated the ruling on July 1 after a number of unfortunate disallowed efforts.

Most notably, Julian Alvarez saw a goal disallowed for accidentally kicking the ball twice during Atletico Madrid's Champions League game against Real Madrid in March.

Mateta's goal proved to be the difference between the two sides at half-time of the Premier League clash at Selhurst Park.

United started the game brightly with Casemiro missing two golden chances to give the visitors the lead, but Palace saw the lion's share of the chances.
