Premier League explain why Jean-Philippe Mateta retook penalty in Man Utd showdown

The reason Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was forced to retake his penalty against Manchester United has been revealed. The Eagles were handed a spot-kick after Leny Yoro brought down the towering Frenchman inside the area. Mateta stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

However, replays revealed a marginal double touch. Explaining the decision on the pitch, referee Rob Jones stated: "After review, Crystal Palace 14 touches the ball twice and the ball goes into the net. It's going to be a retaken penalty."

Commentating on TNT Sport, Ally McCoist remarked: "As you can expect, it was a mixed reaction from the supporters, home and away."

In previous campaigns, such an incident would have seen United handed an indirect free kick.

But a revision of the regulations earlier this year means an unintentional double touch now leads to the penalty being retaken.

It marked the first occasion in the Premier League that the updated rule has been applied.

The amendment followed former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez having a penalty goal chalked off for Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The regulation was also seen during the Women's Euro 2025 final. England's Beth Mead was required to retake her penalty in the shootout, only to see her second effort kept out.

Mateta once more took responsibility for the retaken penalty. He dispatched the ball beyond Senne Lammens again, this time into the opposite bottom corner, to hand Palace a goal advantage.

After the incident, the Premier League confirmed through their Match Centre X account that a VAR review suggested the original penalty goal should be overturned and a retake should occur.

The goal turned out to be the deciding factor between the two teams at half-time, with Ruben Amorim's squad aiming to make a comeback in the second half.
