Five things learned as Manchester United win 2-1 against Crystal Palace

Manchester United produced a terrific second-half comeback to take all three points against Crystal Palace.

Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount scored their first goals of the season to rescue all three points for Manchester United against Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils trailed at half-time to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s spot kick, but Ruben Amorim inspired a brilliant comeback from his players.

Luke Shaw stars as he reaches milestone

Amorim left Lisandro Martinez on the bench and stuck with Luke Shaw as his left-sided centre-back at Selhurst Park.

It marked his 300th appearance for United. Shaw is currently United’s longest-serving player in the squad, and he marked his milestone with an impressive display.

Shaw was criticised against Everton, but he bounced back with a strong defensive performance, including a last-ditch block on Eddie Nketiah in the first half.

Joshua Zirkzee bounces back

With Sesko injured, Amorim was short of attacking options for the trip to Selhurst Park, and he decided to keep faith in Joshua Zirkzee up front.

Zirkzee was disappointing against Everton, and was rightly criticised. A poor start against Palace could have shattered his confidence, but he bounced back brilliantly and fired in an equaliser from a difficult angle.

After nearly a year of not scoring, it was a hugely important goal for both Zirkzee and United.

Man United hard done by new penalty rules

Palace took the lead through Jean Philippe-Mateta’s penalty, but only on his second attempt.

Referee Rob Jones ordered the spot-kick to be re-taken after VAR spotted that Mateta made contact with both feet during his first attempt.

What did you think of Leny Yoro’s challenge for the Crystal Palace penalty?🤔

Last season, Mateta’s goal would have been ruled out entirely without a re-take, but new penalty rules introduced over the summer meant he was allowed a second chance. Unfortunately, Senne Lammens couldn’t change the outcome.

Lisandro Martinez is back, Shea Lacey overlooked

Lisandro Martinez finally made his long-awaited return against Palace, coming on for the final 10 minutes.

It was the second change that Amorim made to his back three in the match, with Noussair Mazraoui also coming on to replace Leny Yoro in the second half.

At the other end of the pitch, Amorim chose not to hand Shea Lacey his senior debut for United.

Amorim was criticised for overlooking Lacey against Everton last week, and he decided to keep him on the bench again at Selhurst Park.

With Premier League games coming thick and fast in the coming weeks, though, it is only a matter of time until Lacey gets his breakthrough.

Dean Henderson’s record ended

Before this match, Dean Henderson had never conceded against United since leaving Old Trafford.

Henderson was never given a real chance to impress at United, but he has become a key player for Palace and has often frustrated his former side when facing them.

In the first minute, Henderson celebrated saving Casemiro’s early chance, but in the second half he was finally beaten by Zirkzee and Mount to end his record.
