Manchester United came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday thanks to second-half goals via Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount.
Manchester United staged a second-half comeback to end Crystal Palace’s 12-game unbeaten home run at Selhurst Park in the Premier League.
Goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount turned the game around after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty had put the London club into a first-half lead.
This win was the perfect response to Monday night’s disappointing display in their 1-0 home defeat to Everton, and it moved Man Utd above the Eagles in the Premier League table and into the top six, albeit possibly only temporarily with more league action yet to come on Sunday afternoon.
Palace opened the scoring in the 36th minute via the ever-reliable Mateta, although his strike came in unusual circumstances.
After the Frenchman was fouled by Leny Yoro, he stepped up to convert from the penalty spot, However, following a VAR review it was deemed that his spot-kick came following a double touch and was ordered to be retaken. Mateta converted yet again, sending Lammens the wrong way, but in the other side of his goal to put the home side 1-0 ahead.
It meant that Mateta kept up his 100% rate from the penalty spot in the Premier League (7/7), while it was his 34th goal in the competition under boss Oliver Glasner – only Erling Haaland (46) and Mohamed Salah (36) have scored more since his first game in charge in February 2024.
Mateta Goals under Glasner
That goal sent Palace into the half-time break with a one-goal lead, and United would have been concerned about yet another defeat under Ruben Amorim. Those fears were justifiable considering the Red Devils had failed to score in the last four Premier League meetings with Palace coming into today, while they’d only won one and drawn five of their 25 away Premier League games when trailing at half-time before this match (L19), beating Man City 2-1 in December 2024.
They’d needn’t have worried, though. Two goals from Zirkzee and Mount in the opening 18 minutes of the second half turned the game on its head.
Monday would have marked a year since Zirkzee last scored in the Premier League for United, but the Dutch forward ended a 364-day spell without a goal with a fantastic low strike past Dean Henderson in the 54th minute. Positioned at a tight angle inside the box, he chested a bouncing ball before firing across Henderson to level the scores and ended a run of 24 Premier League appearances without scoring.

Amorim’s side went into the lead on 63 minutes, with Mount firing a low strike from range beyond a diving Henderson. After Bruno Fernandes had tapped a free-kick into his path, the former England international saw his strike fly between a poorly constructed Palace wall to score his second league goal of the season.
Having also created Zirkzee’s goal, Fernandes’ two assists today took him onto 56 in his Premier League career and beyond Paul Scholes’ tally for the club in the competition (55) and with only Ryan Giggs (162), Wayne Rooney (93) and David Beckham (80) above him in the competition for United. While many of his assists will have displayed more creative nous than this one, his quick-thinking presented the opportunity for Mount to fire past the disorganised wall.

Further good news for United came late into the game, with Lisandro Martínez made his long-awaited return to action from injury after last playing on 2 February, also against Crystal Palace.
Of course, there is still quite a way for Amorim to go to win over United fans. In what was his 40th Premier League game in charge of the club, this was just his 13th victory. Six of those have come in 13 games this season, however, and there are definitely signs of improvement from 2024-25 under the Portuguese.
