Man Utd came from behind to defeat Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday lunchtime.

The Dutch forward kept his place in the United starting line up for the match after Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko both missed the trip to Selhurst Park due to injury. It was only Zirkzee's second start of the campaign in what has been a frustrating season on the sidelines for United.

Zirkzee is frustrated by his lack of playing time at Old Trafford and could look to leave the club on loan in the January window to keep his World Cup dream alive. United are not expected to entertain such a proposal, with the current injury situation evidence of the vital role he still has to play in the first-team squad. His goal against Palace could be a turning point in his fortunes, and the 24-year-old is delighted to be on the scoresheet again.

What Zirkzee said after Manchester United goal vs Palace

It has been almost a year since Joshua Zirkzee scored for Manchester United in the Premier League. The Dutch forward has managed just eight goals in 56 appearances for the club, just four of which have been in the league.

Zirkzee scored a late winner on his league debut against Fulham last season and netted a brace in Ruben Amorim’s first home match against Everton on 1 December last year. He had not scored in the competition since that match, before he fired United level against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

It also marked his first United goal since he scored in the 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League back on 10 April. Speaking after his first goal in seven months, Zirkzee told TNT Sports: “It is one of the biggest clubs in the world. You have to perform. If you don’t score for a long time, it can get to you.

“But I am surrounded by great players, great people and we help each other every day. They made it quite easy for me and today is just a reward I think for patience, hard work and trying to be consistent. I am just thankful to them. The manager as well, staff, everyone. Good environment.”
