Opinion: West Ham target shows why Nuno Espirito Santo must sign him in January

West Ham are keen on signing Manchester United attacker Joshua Zirkzee in the January transfer window.

The Hammers have not been woeful in the final third, but Nuno Espirito Santo does want to add to his ranks in the coming weeks.

Nicklas Fullkrug’s likely exit leaves West Ham United a forward shy and that is why Zirkzee is being considered by the London Stadium hierarchy.

Zirkzee goal for Manchester United vs Crystal Palace shows he could strengthen West Ham United attack

Zirkzee started his second straight game for Manchester United after being sidelined for weeks by Ruben Amorim.

Due to injuries sustained by Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, Amorim had no option but to give the Dutchman the start.

The 24-year-old justified his manager’s faith in him, scoring from an extremely tight angle to equalise for the Red Devils.

Which position do West Ham need to strengthen the most?

That goal drove his team forward and they ended up winning the game 2-1.

This undoubtedly was one of his best performances for the Old Trafford outfit and it shows that if he’s given regular game time, he can deliver the goods.

If West Ham sign Zirkzee, given his age, he’s more likely to start week in and week out compared to Callum Wilson, who is already 33.

Thus, it makes sense to make him a priority ahead of the January window.

Will Manchester United allow Zirkzee to leave?

Amorim will prioritise his team over the whims of individual players, so the final decision is likely to rest with him.

Zirkzee will want to play regularly, as this is a World Cup season and that is not going to happen at Old Trafford once everyone returns to fitness.

However, if West Ham are serious about signing him permanently and tempt Manchester United with the right money, a deal could potentially be done.

It does seem that if Zirkzee is to arrive at the London Stadium, it will most probably be on a temporary basis.

Opening talks with the player and club makes sense, especially if he is high up on Nuno’s transfer wishlist.

The Hammers boss would like an attacker of the 24-year-old’s calibre and it remains to be seen whether moves are made to bring him to East London.
