Manchester United returned to winning ways with a spirited 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
Palace dominated the first half but could only break through via a penalty.
Playing on the right side of the defence, Leny Yoro found himself in trouble after a clumsy tackle on Jean-Philippe Mateta inside the area.
Yoro appeared to slip at the worst possible moment, leaving him unable to recover as Mateta shaped up to unleash a powerful strike at Senne Lammens.
With an unobstructed view of the collision, the referee pointed straight to the spot without a moment’s hesitation.
Ruben Amorim replaced Yoro in the 54th minute with Noussair Mazraoui, hoping to add more controlled progression from the back.
The 20-year-old looked “absolutely devastated” when he sat on the bench after coming off.
He has now received backing from one of the best-ever United centre-backs, Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand wrote on X: “This game can send you crazy at times…Use these learnings as fuel.
“He’s a young player + will bounce back.
Hard work, dedication & his talent is tops. New day tomorrow.”
Yoro has had a tough week as he was also guilty of the goal scored by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 1-0 loss to Everton last week.
There is no doubt that the Frenchman is supremely talented.
Standing tall, powerful, and technically gifted, he possesses all the tools to grow into one of the standout defenders of his generation.
It was refreshing to see a club legend like Ferdinand offering encouragement instead of condemnation.
Amorim may now consider giving Yoro a brief break from the starting XI, especially with Noussair Mazraoui available.
