Andre Onana hits new low as Man Utd flop AXED from Cameroon squad for AFCON

Andre Onana has endured a rollercoaster few seasons having left Manchester United for Turkish side Trabzonspor but it appears that his improved form has done nothing to improve his international prospects

Manchester United flop Andre Onana has hit his lowest ebb yet, having been left out of Cameroon's squad for the African Cup of Nations. The goalkeeper joined Turkish side Trabzonspor in the summer after falling out favour under Ruben Amorim.

And while he has been in better form recently, that has not been enough to see Onana earn a reprieve when it comes to Cameroon. Onana has been left out of his nation's squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament.

The 29-year-old has collected 53 caps for his country so far and played every minute during the African side's World Cup qualifying campaign that ultimately ended in failure. AFCON gets underway on December 21, with Cameroon set to take on Gabon, Ivory Coast and Mozambique in the group stage.

Onana's axe comes on a dramatic day for Cameroon, with manager Marc Brys having been sacked just days before the tournament gets underway.

Onana has made 11 appearances for Trabzonspor so far this season in all competitions. His performances have however reportedly been good enough for club chiefs to make a move for him on a permanent basis.

Speaking earlier this season, Amorim said on his goalkeeper's loan departure: “We saw Andre had a very, very good season at Inter. The quality is there. But we are in the club and sometimes, in the moment, things can get harder and harder.

“You can be really experienced but in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail. I think we understood that this needed a change. Sometimes it’s hard to point why. It’s the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.”

Onana started his career with Dutch side Ajax before moving to Italian giants Inter Milan. He went on to become one of Europe's standout goalkeepers during his time in Serie A.

His form was good enough to convince the Red Devils to pay £43m for his services in 2023. He spent two seasons as United's number one, albeit high-profile mistakes blighted his game at Old Trafford.

He was eventually allowed to leave the club this summer and was replaced by Senne Lammens, who joined United from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian has enjoyed a bright start to life at Old Trafford despite just one clean sheet in his opening seven games.
