Leny Yoro has taken to social media after his mistake in Manchester United's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Frenchman made a clumsy foul on compatriot Jean-Philippe Mateta who scored from 12 yards out to put Palace ahead.

After replays showed the ball had accidentally struck his left foot, Mateta was given the chance to retake the penalty and made no mistake with his second attempt. The rules changed following controversy in Atletico Madrid's Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Real Madrid in March.

At the time, Julian Alvarez slipped as he converted during a penalty shootout, and his standing leg made slight contact with the ball. He was not allowed to retake the spot-kick and Real went on to win the shootout to progress to the quarter-finals.

Following the International Football Association Board's (IFAB) intervention, a 'double-touch penalty' must be retaken rather than disallowed, if the ball goes in from the original kick.

As a result, Mateta put his team ahead in the 36th minute, before Ruben Amorim’s side responded with goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount. Yoro was taken off six minutes before the hour mark and was comforted at full-time by Mason Mount.

Taking to Instagram after the game, Yoro reflected on the difficult game he had at Selhurst Park. "Challenging days - Mindset locked in - Work on."

"Proverbs 24:16: For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again."

Luke Shaw replied with two love heart emojis while Bruno Fernandes responded with a gif of Yoro celebrating.

Meanwhile, Amad, Bryan Mbeumo, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Diogo Dalot, Patrick Dorgu, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, Senne Lammens and Mason Mount all liked the post - showing their support.

The penalty incident sparked debate, with former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher sharing his own verdict on the incident via Sky Sports show Ref Watch.

"This is a first in the Premier League because the law was amended because of [Julian] Alvarez in the Champions League," he explained. "What they decided now is because it's accidental and he's scored it's a retake. If he missed, it would've been an indirect free-kick.

"I think it's only fair. He doesn't mean to slip."

Jay Bothroyd has outlined why Manchester United may feel aggrieved at Mateta being handed a second chance following his error. "I don't agree with that," he added.

"You step up to take a penalty and you plant your foot and touch the ball, it's bad technique. If you take a bad touch, it's just a bad touch. He's planted his foot ahead of the ball and has cut across it. That's his fault. He shouldn't get the opportunity to take it again for his mistake."
