Andre Onana’s career has suffered another hammer blow after he was omitted from Cameroon’s 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper featured in all six matches for the Indomitable Lions as they qualified for the continental showpiece in Morocco, keeping four clean sheets and conceding just three goals.
But Onana slipped down the pecking order at Manchester United this season and his two mistakes against Grimsby in the EFL Cup on August 27 hardly helped his cause as Ruben Amorim’s side were eliminated 12-11 on penalties.
The former Inter Milan shot-stopper, who only made that one appearance for the Red Devils, was subsequently shipped off to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan and he’s been an ever-present in the Turkish Super Lig.
Onana has helped the Black Sea Storm to third in the standings as they trail league leaders Galatasaray by just two points after 14 games and boast the third-best defensive record.
However, it has not been enough to earn him a place as one of the four keepers in David Pagou’s AFCON squad, with Simon Omossola, Devis Epassy, Simon Ngapandouetnbu and Edouard Sombang all selected ahead of him.
Vincent Aboubakar, who captained the team during the AFCON qualifiers and their failed 2026 World Cup bid, has also been snubbed by Pagou.
