Surprise as Catalan media report Marcus Rashford could be sent back to Manchester United

Marcus Rashford could be sent back to Manchester United, despite impressing at Barcelona since his arrival on loan in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Sport and journalist Alfredo Martínez. He recently appeared on the Sport programme Moeve Fútbol Zone.

According to his information, Barcelona have not yet decided whether to exercise a purchase option for the winger. That’s valued at just over €30m.

While Rashford has impressed since joining from Manchester United, with six goals and eight assists in 18 games so far, there are issues. His high salary and ‘lack of adaptation’ to Hansi Flick’s high-pressing style are hindering his continued presence in Barcelona.

“There are voices for and against (his staying),” explained Martínez.

“Some don’t want him to stay because Rashford isn’t the type of player who presses high up the pitch, and besides, he has a very high salary. Barcelona is looking, among others, for a left winger, a player to provide cover for Raphinha.”

One of those being looked at as an alternative to Rashford is RB Leipzig youngster Antonio Nusa. In fact, Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, recently had his right-hand man in Milan with the player’s agents. He’s one of three alternatives to the Manchester United man being looked at.

It appears that no major decision has been made as yet. But Barcelona are assessing their options.

No firm decision has been made on the €30m option to sign Rashford on a permanent basis from Manchester United. In fact, there’s a real possibility he could be sent back to Old Trafford.

This is no great shock, although a surprise considering his impact. When La Liga clubs sign players on loan from the Premier League, it is rare the purchase clause is used. That’s even the case when someone has impressed.

La Liga clubs will often try to negotiate the figure downwards. That may be what this is all about, or a desire to consider a younger player.
