Ruben Amorim accused Man United players of doing something ‘dangerous’ in last West Ham defeat, it must change

Ruben Amorim will want to see a vastly improved Manchester United performance against West Ham this season.

Manchester United lost 2-0 to West Ham at Old Trafford towards the end of the 2024/25 season, which extended Ruben Amorim’s streak to seven Premier League games without a win.

There have been clear improvements in United’s performances this season, but Amorim has still been left scratching his head at the inconsistency of his side.

Unlike in the last meeting, where United’s full focus was on the Europa League final, this time around, there is nothing else for the Red Devils to prioritise other than league results.

As well as a positive result, Amorim will be keeping an eye out for a better mentality from his players.

Ruben Amorim attacked Man United mentality after losing to West Ham

In the post-Ferguson era, United have been repeatedly accused of lowering standards and having attitude problems.

As recently as this season, Cristiano Ronaldo questioned United’s mentality, and it was also a major concern for Amorim last season.

After the defeat to West Ham, Amorim accused his players of being mentally weak and no longer fearing defeat.

Are Ruben Amorim’s comments from the last West Ham defeat still relevant now?

“We are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United. We don’t have that fear anymore and that is the most dangerous thing that a big club can have.”

“We need to feel that it is the end of the world when we are not winning a game,” Amorim said in May.

“Especially when we are not winning. So it’s a big problem that we have here at the club. It’s a decisive moment in the history of the club. We need to address that. It’s a big problem because it’s mentality.

Man United mentality is key against West Ham

Consistency has been a major issue for United for years, and fans know better than anyone that strong results are often followed by complacent performances and demoralising losses.

Amorim has warned against complacency after witnessing the deflating 1-0 defeat against Everton, when the Toffees won at Old Trafford with 10 men.

Winning 2-1 against Crystal Palace on the weekend was a huge result for Amorim and his players, especially away from home. But it will feel meaningless if the squad is not able to build on the result and beat a struggling West Ham side at home.

Complacency must be avoided and United need to show intensity and urgency from minute one on Thursday evening.

Amorim is under pressure to prove he is taking United in the right direction, and avenging last season’s result against West Ham would be a big positive.
