Jean-Philippe Mateta saw his initial penalty ruled out before the 28-year-old stepped up and beat Senne Lammens for the second time from his spot-kick retake.

However, United hit back against Palace inside 10 minutes after the break, with Joshua Zirkzee converting a superb finish from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick.

The Eagles went 2-1 down – and eventually lost – after Bruno Fernandes picked up another assist from a free-kick when he set up Mason Mount for United’s winner.

Manchester United’s 2-1 result over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park was a huge boost for Ruben Amorim after the Red Devils’ form took a hit in recent weeks.

The Red Devils dropped important Premier League points to Nottingham Forest and Tottenham away from home ahead of the start of the November international break.

Amorim was then forced to watch on from the Old Trafford dugout as United suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton in a stunning upset last week.

Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Denis Irwin insisted that United’s three Premier League points against Palace were vital after the recent run of form.

“It was needed,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“We had a fantastic October and it feels like the season keeps being interrupted by the international breaks.

“We drew a couple at Forest and Spurs, where we could have lost them and we could have won them.

“Then obviously the disappointment of Everton at home, so we needed that at Palace.”

Denis Irwin’s prediction for Man Utd under Ruben Amorim in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign

United are currently seventh in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are only three points outside of the top four after their 13 league matches this season.

The Red Devils have lost only once in their last five Premier League matches and Irwin has predicted the next three or four fixtures could be huge for Amorim’s men.

“It’s so tight up there that we need to keep in there and hang in there,” Irwin continued.

“I don’t like doing this because it could go pear-shaped but if you look at the next three or four games, potentially we could make another step forward.

“We are getting there gradually. I still think there will be a lot of ups and downs, but I can see progress, I really can. It was a huge win for us.”

United will play Premier League sides West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Wolves again in December before the Red Devils sign off 2025.
