Newcastle United and Man Utd reignite interest in former transfer target amid contract stand-off

Newcastle United 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Joe Buck match reaction

The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United and Manchester United as the January transfer window rapidly approaches.

The January transfer window is now under a month away and it will present Newcastle United with an opportunity to strengthen their squad in a bid to move on from what has been a challenging opening half to the Premier League season.

The Magpies have endured a frustrating campaign so far with impressive wins against the likes of Manchester City and Everton sitting alongside poor performances in defeats against Brentford, West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion. There was further frustration on Tuesday night when an all-too-familiar failing came back to haunt the Magpies as their inability to hold on to a lead cost them a morale boosting win against Tottenham Hotspur as a last-gasp equaliser from Cristian Romero earned a point for the visitors.

There is a clear need for Newcastle to strengthen in some key areas and there have been some suggestions a new centre-back could arrive over the course of the next two transfer windows as club captain Jamaal Lascelles and long-serving defender Fabian Schar approach the final six months of their current deals at St James Park. It seems far from certain either player will form part of the United squad next season and despite the presence of Sven Botman, Malick Thiaw and Dan Burn, a new centre-back could be brought in should firm decisions be made to bring an end to Lascelles and Schar’s long stints on Tyneside.

A report in Portugal has now claimed the Magpies are considering reigniting their interest in a highly-rated defender that has been linked with a move to St James Park on several occasions in recent seasons. Sporting CP and Ivory Coast star Ousmane Diomande has continually impressed for the Portuguese giants since establishing himself in their first-team on the back of a successful loan spell with second tier club Mafra. The 21-year-old already has over a century of senior appearances under his belt and has become a Primeira Liga champion and a Portuguese Cup winner over the last two and a half years. Diomande would also bring experience of playing in European competition on a regular basis with a combined 24 appearances across the Champions League and Europa League throughout his career.

It is the latter of the Premier League trio that are described as ‘very attentive’ to the defender after reportedly making a £50m offer for his services during the summer transfer window - but both Newcastle and Manchester United are also said to be long-term admirers of the talented defender.
