Rúben Amorim’s lack of reliance on Manchester United’s Academy has led fans to feel that something is missing from the current side, despite a change in form.
One of the key core values of Manchester United is faith in the Academy stars. Over the years, the United Academy has produced an unbelievable amount of world-class talent.
Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir David Beckham and George Best have had an unprecedented impact on the world of football, and all graduated from the United Academy.
Throughout the 2010s, graduates included Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay who have all since left United to play for teams across Europe. In the 2020s, the Academy production has seemed to slow down with United seemingly struggling to keep up their impressive academy streak.
United have had a homegrown talent in every match day squad since 1937, an unbelievable accomplishment lasting for over 4,000 games but the streak has been on the minds of many United fans recently as it seemingly gets harder for Rúben Amorim to keep it.
Kobbie Mainoo graduated from the academy in 2023 and has since made 82 appearances for the club. Mainoo featured heavily throughout the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons but has struggled to return to the lineup this season and has yet to start a Premier League game.
With Mainoo’s recent injury, Amorim called up 18-year-old Jack Fletcher to the squad against Tottenham to keep the streak going, someone who would otherwise be playing for the U21s. In previous years, the streak wasn’t a problem with academy graduates featuring in games without having to come off the bench.
Amorim needs to show faith in Lacey and others
With Rashford leaving on loan to Barcelona during the summer transfer window, a permanent move away is highly likely. Rashford graduated from the United academy in 2016 and has gone on to make 426 appearances for the club, becoming arguably the best United player post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Since his departure, many United fans have felt a gap in the United squad of an academy talent who starts consistently. Alejandro Garnacho had a disappointing end to his United career, with many United fans believing he could fill this role, but issues with attitude and work rate led the Argentine to join Chelsea in the summer.
With Amorim’s seeming lack of faith in Mainoo, despite his talent, there are still shoes to be filled. Shea Lacey is among the names to have featured in recent United squads. The 18-year-old has been on top form for the U21′ and has been training with both the United senior team and the England senior team.
Lacey was an unused substitute in United’s last two games against Everton and Crystal Palace but with the tight fixture list and many AFCON departures, a debut for the winger looks likely in the coming weeks.
Carrington is full of academy talent waiting to be used
Lacey is just one of the many talents seen at the United Academy over recent years. Harry Amass is currently on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and is in top form for the club. The Wing-back would fit perfectly into Amorim’s tactical setup, so he can expect to feature in the coming seasons as he develops.
Toby Collyer and Radek Vitek are also amongst loanee talents in the championship who are expecting to return to the club next season and fight for a place in the squad, having developed to senior football.
There is also younger talent at United hoping to break into the team in the future and follow in the footsteps of legends like Beckham, Best and Charlton.

JJ Gabriel is one star whose name is often featured in news surrounding the most exciting upcoming talents. The attacker has caught the eye of many and even sparked rumours of a move to Barcelona despite being just 15.
Chido Obi signed from Arsenal last year and made eight professional appearances for United despite being just seventeen. The striker has since returned to the academy but expects to appear in the first team lineup in the future.
United have many academy talents, but if there is a lack of faith in them, then we may never see a return of a group as groundbreaking as the Class of ’92.
