Ruben Amorim said he had no regrets over his second-half substitutes in Manchester United's draw with West Ham despite criticism they had been too negative. After replacing Ayden Heaven with Leny Yoro at half-time, he brought Patrick Dorgu on for Diogo Dalot and in a bid to see out the game took off Joshua Zirkzee for Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha for Manuel Ugarte.
With West Ham level in the 83rd minute, the United head coach then took off Luke Shaw for Lisandro Martinez and left Kobbie Mainoo on the bench, despite his team needing a winner. But Amorim said he had made the changes because his team were losing too many second balls and he felt they still had the firepower to score goals.
"No," he said when asked if he would change the replacements. "We are losing because of the second ball. Sometimes there's not more men in front that you are going to win the ball. We had more men to put in the offense. Who would be more offensive?
"It was the second ball. I was worried with Matheus. I know that Bruno has reached the box really well. Mason Mount is playing in his position. They were trying to push us. Bryan has a lot of pace to try to win the ball in one position. So that was my idea."
Asked how he felt after seeing his side concede a late equaliser that cost them a chance of going fifth in the Premier League, he said he was "frustrated and angry", but then rejected claims his team were failing to progress.
"It’s not going backwards, we had some moments," he said. "That can happen. You were talking about when we had the [good] run we were perfect, we are not, we are really inconsistent.
"If you look at the goal, 83 minutes we have a log ball and everything under control and we have to do better."
