Diogo Dalot made the first major impact of the Premier League contest at Old Trafford after the 26-year-old broke the deadlock in the second half of the tie.

Despite United’s 1-0 lead over West Ham, the Hammers fought back and received a moment of fortune after Noussair Mazraoui’s clearance of Jarrod Bowen’s header.

Soungoutou Magassa was in the right place at the right time and he was able to bury the ball into the back of the United net to pull West Ham level in the 83rd minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Thursday evening’s contest, United manager Ruben Amorim insisted that the Red Devils lost “control” of the match after going 1-0 up.

“It was not constant,” he said.

“We had good moments and we lost a little bit of control after the goal. We should have closed the game when we scored the first one.

“The game was in control, we knew it. Any set pieces can be a problem. We couldn’t maintain the ball after the goal.”

United are now eighth in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are two points outside of the top four after West Ham snatched a late equaliser at Old Trafford.

Amorim is convinced that United players allowed West Ham to climb back into the Premier League contest by letting the Hammers win the “first ball” when they could.

“Losing second balls, running with the ball, they were winning the first ball,” he said.

“We can control that kind of game. We should be better with the ball after the first goal.

“The characteristics with the players inside the box were sometimes not enough.”

United will now return to Premier League action on Monday evening and the Red Devils will face Wolves at an 8pm kick-off time in the UK at the Molineux.
