Manchester United suffered a deflating 1-1 draw against West Ham United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
The Red Devils dominated the game for large parts but only had one goal to show for it through Diogo Dalot.
Soungoutou Magassa stunned the home crowd in the 83rd minute, steering in the equaliser that sucked the energy out of the stadium.
After the final whistle, Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane unleashed a stinging critique of the club hierarchy, accusing them of leaving the squad dangerously thin.
He said (via Sky Sports): “When you look at the squad, considering the money that has been spent, they lack strength in depth. Particularly in the attacking areas.
“I look at Mason Mount when he came on, he was like a schoolboy out there! You’re looking for players to come on with presence.
“They brought the levels down at United. That seemed to be the case tonight.”
Mount entered the fray in the 78th minute for Joshua Zirkzee, who had been enjoying one of his livelier performances in a United shirt.
That 12-minute display was disappointed as he virtually has no notable contributions up front.
He neither took a shot nor created a chance for his side.
Worryingly, Mount was the only attacking change Ruben Amorim made all evening.
All four of the other substitutes were defensive reinforcements, a decision that irritated the home supporters and baffled former United players like Keane.
With Benjamin Sesko injured, Amorim only had Shea Lacey and Kobbie Mainoo on the bench, both of whom could have provided a new attacking dimension.
It was baffling to see the head coach ignore the duo and send Lisandro Martinez on in the 88th minute.
It increasingly feels as though Amorim has not absorbed the lessons from the Everton defeat, and the recurring patterns suggest he is reluctant to confront his own tactical missteps.
United had a golden chance to climb into fifth place, yet they now sit eighth, taking just a point from back-to-back home fixtures against Everton and West Ham.
