Jamie Carragher responded with laughing and money bag emojis in a brutal response to Rio Ferdinand, following an interview he gave on the upcoming 2026 World Cup draw. The former Manchester United defender is one of the hosts in America for the competition, which will determine the group setup.
FIFA have come under fire ahead of the World Cup due to the cost of tickets for fans, with one recent listing for a ticket to the semi-final on the official resale platform going for £161,000. In the build up to the draw, Ferdinand was questioned about the ticketing prices and whether the game should be more accessible.
He said to the BBC: "I am a man of the people in terms of I'm from a place where we were always hoping for things to be accessible. I know that the people behind the scenes at FIFA are aiming and working to something like that now, whether they get there for that remains to be seen.
"I think we have to be conscious of that and I think FIFA are definitely people who are conscious of that, the powers that be there. I think we can look at every industry, every sector, we have that conversation about things and I think it's more about making sure that there's a product that's super elite that matches what's on the pitch and then everyone can feel that it's justified taking time out and working hard to go and get tickets."
Ferdinand came under fire for some of his comments, which included a brutal response from Carragher under the video of the interview. The former Liverpool defender posted some laughing emojis above emojis of some money bags.
The conversation over the ticket prices isn't the only thing to overshadow the draw for the upcoming World Cup in North America. There is also the FIFA Peace Prize, a new award that is expected to be handed to American President Donald Trump during the draw ceremony.
