Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer has suffered "quite a big injury" on loan at West Brom. Collyer has returned to Carrington to be assessed, but West Brom are hopeful he can contribute to their promotion push in the second half of the season. Collyer received permanent and loan interest from over a dozen clubs in the Championship during the summer transfer window, but West Brom won the race for his signature.
The youngster's loan at the Hawthorns hasn't gone to plan, though. Collyer picked up a muscle injury in October, which kept him out for four games, and suffered a more serious issue after his return. Collyer was absent from the West Brom squad last weekend. Their manager, Ryan Mason, spoke to the Express & Star on Thursday and confirmed he has returned to Carrington to be assessed.
Mason explained: “It’s quite a big injury. He’s at United at the minute. They’re just assessing him, and then I think in the coming weeks we’ll just decide his plan regarding his rehab.”
When asked if the injury could impact Collyer's loan, Mason said: "We’ve got him on loan for the season. That’s the plan. Normally, any loan player who gets an injury that’s a bit more than a small one, more of a significant one, I think it’s right for the parent club to look at them to check them over.
"We’re in dialogue and hopefully he can do his rehab and come back better. We’re looking into it, both clubs. He’s disappointed, naturally. When you’re trying to build your career when you have setbacks that hold you back, it’s challenging. But I guess the reality is to get to the top in any industry there’s going to be challenges. I think if he’s clever, if he uses it wisely, then for sure it can make him stronger in many different aspects."
Collyer made 13 first-team appearances in a breakthrough 2024/2025 season at Old Trafford. Last year, a source discussed Erik ten Hag's fondness for Collyer and another source said he records 'freakish' running stats in training that are only bettered by Bruno Fernandes.
Ruben Amorim has praised Collyer. "He has very good legs, he's improving with the ball. He knows what he needs to do to play for this club and feels the club in the right way. He's really humble and when you work hard, you get the opportunity," said Amorim in January.
Collyer's contract at United runs until the summer of 2027, with the option of another year.
