Manchester United have been linked to signing a £26m midfielder in the January transfer window.

United missed out on a chance to climb into the top five of the Premier League table.

They next face off against Wolves on Monday night, and will hope to build their momentum over the winter period. That includes potentially strengthening in the January transfer window, as reports have said that United want to sign a new midfielder.

Gallagher hints at January transfer move

Man United reportedly made a move to sign Atletico Madrid in the summer on loan; however, the Red Devils were turned away, as the La Liga side only wanted a permanent sale for the former Chelsea midfielder.

It seems the same over the winter period, however, reports this week have said that Atletico could be willing to sell him for as little as £26m, which for a player of Gallagher’s quality is a bargain. He’s made 15 appearances in La Liga this season, scoring one goal. However, most of his appearances have been from the bench, and the midfielder wants more guaranteed minutes.

He said in an interview with Sky Sports: “I'm happy, but obviously I want to play as much as possible. Every footballer would like to be on the pitch for 90 minutes every single game. Obviously, I'm at a world-class club and there's a lot of amazing players.

"The most important thing is how the team plays and the results we get. At the moment, it's going really well for us."

His hint at wanting more game time suggests he could be open to a move in January if United could guarantee him more minutes, even though he insists that he’s happy in the Spanish capital.

Which other midfielders could Man United sign?

As previously mentioned, the likes of Wharton, Baleba and Anderson will all be very difficult to sign in January, and United would really be looking at one of them in the summer as a marquee signing.

However, Wolves star Joao Gomes could be doable this Winter. The 24-year-old has been a bright spark in a poor Wolves side this season, and has reportedly had his head turned by the possibility of moving to Man United.

Despite this, though, Wolves have said they don’t plan to sell him, and have set a hefty price tag of at least £44m for the Brazilian. He’s played in every PL game Wolves have had so far this year, and United are likely to get a look at him when the two teams meet on Monday night.
