The pressure is building on Arne Slot as Liverpool struggle to keep their positive form alive
Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have reportedly identified their ‘preferred candidate’ to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool, should form at the club continue to struggle.
Slot is feeling the pressure right now, having gone from lifting the Premier League trophy in his maiden season, to sitting ninth in the table in just a matter of months.
Liverpool have lost six of their last nine league games, putting them 11 points behind leaders Arsenal. Their chances of defending their title are rapidly fading each week. They are also out of the Carabao Cup and have slipped to 13th in the Champions League standings.
Will Liverpool sack Arne Slot?
Multiple reports suggesting Slot’s job is in danger have been doing the rounds for weeks now. Liverpool’s recent 4-1 defeat to PSV in the Champions League was arguably the biggest concern of the season so far, with pressure significantly mounting on the Dutchman’s shoulders.
There has even been talks suggesting Steven Gerrard could be called upon to step in as interim manager, should the club opt to give Slot the boot.
“There are so many games coming up that I was thinking I don't see Slot getting through all of them in good enough condition, and I think the pressure from the terraces and the fan base might get too much and they might make a decision,” Ferdinand said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.
“In that climate, with someone like Steven Gerrard sitting there, a legend of the club – forget his tenures at different clubs. There's a legend of the football club ready to come in and just steady the ship for them. I wouldn't have been surprised if Steven Gerrard had gotten a call.”
Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes ‘seriously considering’ Arne Slot replacement
Since Liverpool’s dramatic dip in form started, multiple names have been linked with the manager job, including Slot’s predecessor Jurgen Klopp.
According to CaughtOffside, Edwards and Hughes are said to be ‘seriously considering’ Oliver Glasner as a replacement for Slot. He is also admired by rivals Manchester United with Ruben Amorim’s future not completely certain.
Talks with the Crystal Palace manager have not yet taken place but he is reportedly a figure who is ‘strongly appreciated’ by those at Anfield. If things with Slot do not improve soon, Liverpool will be ‘prepared to make a decision’ on his future, and Glasner has emerged as the ‘preferred candidate’ to take over the reins.
The report has described Glasner as having ‘over-achieved’ during his time at Selhurst Park so far. The Austrian coach joined the club in February 2024 and guided the Eagles to their first major trophy in May 2025, when they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Glasner has since won another trophy with Palace, snubbing Liverpool in the Community Shield, but he may be looking to take his career to the next level with a fresh challenge that comes with higher expectations.
