Sergio Reguilon's football exile is nearing its end, it has been claimed. The former Manchester United and Tottenham left-back has been without a club since leaving North London in June and has needed to be patient.

Now, though, he's set to get his reward. Reports in the autumn suggested Lionel Messi's Inter Miami were keen on bringing the Spanish international to Major League Soccer, and an announcement is said to be close.

According to Marca (via Sport Witness), Reguilon is Inter's 'Plan A' as they look to replace Jordi Alba. Champions League winner Alba is set to retire after this weekend's MLS Cup final against Vancouver Whitecaps, as is team-mate Sergio Busquets, and the Spanish outlet reports that Reguilon's arrival as a replacement for Alba is a 'done deal'.

The same publication indicates Reguilon has been 'training extensively' on his own while unattached. The 28-year-old hasn't played a minute of senior football since May, when he earned a rare start for Spurs against Aston Villa - one of just six appearances he made last term.

An announcement might not be immediate, but could come in the next few days. First, the club plan to give Alba a proper farewell as he bows out.

“I can’t tell you how the experience will be because I’ll live it in the moment,” said Alba. The 36-year-old, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, has 11 goals and 29 assists in his 65 MLS games - as well as one goal and six assists in playoff appearances - after linking up with former Barca colleagues Messi, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez.

“My last game with Barcelona was very emotional, exciting, because I knew it was the last time I’d wear that shirt that gave me so much. But this is everything. It’s not about going from one team to another. It’s leaving soccer. Obviously, it’s a bigger step.”

Reguilon began his career with Barcelona's great rivals Real Madrid before winning the Europa League during a loan spell with Sevilla. That earned him a move to Jose Mourinho's Spurs in 2020, but he managed just 73 appearances for the club.

He had three loan spells during his time in North London, picking up minutes for Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford. The United stint was particularly brief, with Reguilon playing just 655 minutes under Erik ten Hag before United triggered an option to cut the loan short.

"It has been great to play for Manchester United and I just want to say thank you to the club, the fans and my teammates," he said after the spell came to an end. "It was a privilege to play for this huge club. I wish all the best for the Red Devils."
