On This Day in Football: 7th December

7th December 1990

On this day, Scarborough hosted Wrexham at the McCain Stadium in a Fourth Division fixture that would go down in history for its notably low attendance. Despite the pouring rain on a dreary Friday night, Scarborough managed to secure a 4-2 victory over Wrexham. The match was witnessed by just 625 spectators, marking the lowest ever attendance for a Fourth Division match. The 1990-91 season was a peculiar one for Wrexham. They finished at the bottom of the Fourth Division standings but avoided relegation to the Conference due to an expansion of the Football League. Interestingly, Wrexham, as the Welsh Cup holders, had a memorable run in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, reaching the Second Round. They faced Manchester United in both home and away legs. Despite the proximity of Wrexham to Manchester, being only about 50 miles apart, UEFA regulations required Manchester United to commence their journey at least 24 hours before the scheduled kick-off to avoid any potential travel delays.

7th December 2002

On this day, Arsenal faced Manchester United at Old Trafford in a Premier League clash. The match ended in a 2-0 defeat for Arsenal, marking the first time they had failed to score in a League match since May 2001. This result brought an end to Arsenal’s remarkable run of scoring in 55 consecutive League matches, a record-breaking streak that surpassed the previous record of 46 consecutive scoring matches set by Chesterfield in 1929 and 1930. The match at Old Trafford thus concluded a significant chapter in Arsenal’s scoring history, highlighting the competitive nature of the Premier League and the challenges faced by even the most prolific teams.
