Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea had a nightmare performance as Fiorentina’s struggles continued.
It has been two years since David de Gea left Manchester United as a free agent after spending the previous 12 years at Old Trafford.
De Gea considered retirement after leaving United, and he spent an entire year without a club before signing for Fiorentina in 2024.

Last season, De Gea was brilliant for Fiorentina as they secured a sixth-placed finish in Serie A.
However, De Gea’s honeymoon period is over, and the Spanish shot-stopper now finds himself at the heart of a crisis.

David de Gea plunged Fiorentina into ‘abyss’
Fiorentina suffered a 3-1 defeat to Sassuolo this weekend, meaning De Gea’s side are still yet to win in 2025/26 across their 14 Serie A matches.
De Gea was rated just 4.1/10 for his performance on Sofascore – the lowest of any player on the pitch. He made two errors leading to goals and ended with -2.04 goals prevented.

TuttoMercatoWeb said De Gea was the “first to drag his side into the abyss”, making a “glaring error” for Sassuolo’s equaliser, and then another mistake failing to deal with a corner kick.
They also pointed out that Fiorentina haven’t won a game in 195 days, have the worst defence in Serie A and have conceded a league-topping 10 goals from set pieces.
David de Gea headed for relegation with Fiorentina
Many players who have left United have gone on to thrive, and it seemed as though De Gea may follow the same path after a bright start at Fiorentina.
But it has turned sour in 2025/26 for the four-time winner of United’s Player of the Year award.

Fiorentina sit at the bottom of the Serie A table with only six points from 14 matches. De Gea has cost his side valuable points and is now at risk of suffering relegation to Serie B.
De Gea extended his contract with Fiorentina in the summer, taking his stay at the Italian side to 2028. However, if they cannot turn things around he could find himself playing in the second division next season.
