Former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood could be involved in a huge January transfer

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has emerged as a priority transfer target for a number of Saudi Pro League clubs after a strong start to the season with French outfit Marseille.

Greenwood joined United when he was just six-years-old and progressed into the first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the age of 17 years and 156 days when he appeared for the first time as a subsitute during a 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in March 2019. That same season, he received the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, given each year to the best player in the club's youth teams.

He enjoyed a strong breakthrough season during the 2019/20 campaign which saw him score 17 times across all competitions while making his England debut. Overall, he scored 35 and assisted 12 in 139 matches for the Red Devils before departing for France in July 2024 for a fee of around £26.6m. The exit followed charges against Greenwood for cases of attempted rape and assault, which were subsequently dropped in February 2024.

Greenwood has rediscovered his goalscoring touch since moving to Marseille, scoring 33 times in 55 appearances across all competitions since making his move to the Stade Velodrome. He was the joint top scorer in Ligue 1 alongside Ousmane Dembele last term with 21 goals and is currently leading goalscorer this season with 10 goals from his opening 14 matches.

This development has not gone unnoticed in Saudi Arabia. It’s reported by Spanish outlet Fichajes that a number of teams in the Middle East could make offers for Greenwood this winter to try and entice him to leave Europe.

Neom plot blockbuster move for Mason Greenwood

Newly-promoted Saudi Pro League club Neom have emerged as strong contenders to sign Greenwood. It’s reported that they have made an offer worth somewhere in the region of €100m (around £87m) to try and sign the 24-year-old as they look to enhance their attacking options.

Neom are managed by former Paris Saint-Germain head coach Christophe Galtier. Their squad currently features a number of high-profile players from the European game, including former Arsenal striker Alexander Lacazette, ex-Everton playmaker Abdoulaye Doucouré, former West Ham winger Said Benrahma and Ahmed Hegazi, formely of West Brom.

They are eighth in the table after nine matches but have ambitions of competing with some of the biggest teams in the division. Marseille are thought to be keen to retain Greenwood but could consider a sale if they recieve a big offer that they can’t refuse.

Man Utd could land huge windfall from Mason Greenwood’s next transfer

When selling Greenwood to Marseille, United negotiated a 50 per cent sell-on clause in any profit that would be made if the Ligue 1 club sold the forward. United stand to make millions if Greenwood is sold, although 10 per cent of whatever money they get must be paid to Spanish side Getafe, who had Greenwood on loan during the 2023/24 season in the first transfer following the forward’s off-the-field issues.

Therefore if Greenwood was to join Neom for £87m, United would recieve around £39.1m which would be a huge boost to Ruben Amorim’s side in terms of Profit and Sustainability heading into the January transfer window.
