Manchester United are looking to sign a new defensive midfielder in the next two transfer windows.
Man United will be heading into the January transfer window with their key targets already identified. The biggest need that the Red Devils have is in midfield, as reports have said that United are expected to spend big on a holding midfielder in the next two transfer windows.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also still a target. United tried to make a move for him in the summer, but the Seagulls priced him at over £100m. All three are expected to be expensive, so United must pick the right one.
Elliot Anderson can be the next Roy Keane
Elliot Anderson is seemingly the first choice at the moment, due to his exceptional performances for Forest over the past year or so, and his incredible breakout into Thomas Tuchel’s England side.
Anderson has become a mainstay in Tuchel’s midfield, alongside Declan Rice, and he’s shown himself to be one of the best holding midfielders in the world. He is impeccable at winning the ball back in midfield and helping his side to then begin transition into attack.
It’s something that United don’t currently have in their ranks, but it isn’t unfamiliar. Roy Keane used to be an expert at ball-winning in the middle of the park; he was robust and commanding, traits that Anderson has. The best of it all is that Keane’s discipline, which often let him down, doesn’t show in Anderson.
So, he has all the technical potential to become the next Keane, but his attitude is also incredibly good. It seems a no-brainer that United should go after the Forest star, even though he is going to be a very, very expensive addition, likely in the summer.
Man United face competition for Anderson
The Red Devils aren’t the only Premier League side keen to sign Anderson, as two major English clubs also want to sign him. Firstly, Newcastle are interested in bringing him back to St James’ Park, as they were forced to sell him to Forest in 2024 due to PSR concerns.
Due to this rival interest, United will need to be quick for Anderson, and potentially go after him in January if they can afford to do so. If not, they should be early in the summer for him to get ahead of their rivals.
