'A good example' - Henrik Pedersen makes Harry Amass point as Sheffield Wednesday wait on…

Sheffield Wednesday: Sale updates and next steps

Harry Amass has flourished since joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Manchester United in September.

Manager Henrik Pedersen believes Sheffield Wednesday, Manchester United and Harry Amass are all benefitting from the full-back’s loan spell at Hillsborough.

The teenager joined Wednesday on loan on deadline day after United agreed to cover all the finances involved in the deal. He is scheduled to stay in S6 until January, and Pedersen has already expressed his desire to keep him for the remainder of the season.

Amass, 18, has started every Championship game since joining the Owls, establishing himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet. He scored his first senior goal prior to the November international break, firing in a brilliant effort against Southampton, before securing his first assist of his loan spell against Preston North End just over a week ago.

As Wednesday wait to find out if they will be given the green light to bring new players in during the upcoming January transfer window, the club, should it get permission to strengthen Pedersen’s squad, ought to be hopeful Premier League clubs looking to send their young talent out on loan will recognise the good work the Owls have done with Amass.

Asked if he believes the progress Amass has made at Hillsborough could stand Wednesday in good stead in January, Pedersen told The Star: "I think Harry is a good example. It is not easy, in general, to send players out on loan and make a good story because clubs want to develop their own players. When a young player comes on loan, you have to make a good plan for him.

"It is a good story for the club to help to get better results, it is a good story for the player as he is going to become a better player by getting a lot of playing time, and it is a good story for the club who sent the player so they get a better player back.

Pedersen delighted with Amass’ development

“The coaches, the staff, I think we have done a great job for Harry, and I think his individual development has been amazing.

"All what we are doing with him for his personal development and also for his individual feedback from training and games. I think his physical development has been good.

"I think there are a lot of things that have gone in the right direction. It was good in the beginning, then he was a little bit down now he has been very stable. We have to keep that level up and make the next step for him."

United, back in the summer, identified Hillsborough as an ideal place for Amass to continue his development, recognising he would store valuable minutes under his belt.

“We are in contact with Manchester United, and Kevin (Beadell) is speaking with them a lot,” Pedersen confirmed. “We are in running dialogue to give them a heads-up for what we are doing with him.”

Tuesday night’s trip to Watford will offer Amass a reminder of where his career began. Although he never played a senior game for the Hornets, he did make the bench for an FA Cup tie in 2023 at the age of just 15.

"It will be special for him, but I have a feeling Harry looks forward to all the games we are playing,” Pedersen smiled. “He is always ready and he is a fantastic young man."
