Leeds United matched a feat they last achieved in Manchester United demolition in Liverpool draw

The Elland Road crowd witnessed something they had not seen since February 1972 as Leeds United overturned a two-goal deficit to pull off a dramatic escape against Liverpool.

Ao Tanaka was the hero once again for Leeds as his dramatic late goal salvaged a point for the Whites, as they climbed up to 16th in the Premier League table.

Daniel Farke will be relieved to end a difficult week, having secured four points, with reports suggesting that he could lose his job at Leeds if he had lost all three games in the week.

With the scores locked at 0-0 at half-time, few would have predicted the festival of goals that followed in the second half at Elland Road.

With six goals going in, Leeds matched a record set in 1972, when Don Revie’s legendary side demolished Manchester United.

According to Opta’s Jonny Cooper, two individual records fell in Leeds’ thrilling draw against Liverpool at Elland Road.

This was the first time since 1989 that the two sides were locked at 0-0 at half-time, before going on to score three goals each in the second half, and only the second time in Leeds history this has happened.

Leeds drew 3-3 with Portsmouth on that occasion, as goals from Mike Whitlow, Mel Sterland and Bobby Davison put the Whites 3-1 ahead before they surrendered their lead.

However, the draw against Liverpool is also the first time that a top-flight Leeds game has seen six second-half goals since 1972, according to a separate post from Cooper.

Elland Road also witnessed something special on that occasion, as Leeds put arch-rivals Manchester United to the sword in a 5-1 victory.

Mick Jones hat-trick hands Leeds famous win over Manchester United

Leeds’ 5-1 win over Manchester United is still regarded as one of the greatest performances in the club’s history as Revie’s men put on a show.

Man Utd had led the First Division title race for much of the season, but Leeds were surging towards securing the crown with the side arguably at the peak of their powers.

Leeds had the better of the first half, but they got their rewards after the break. Mick Jones eventually broke the deadlock, reacting fastest to poke home from close range after Eddie Gray’s shot ricocheted off the post.

Jones then turned creator, as his shot from a Peter Lorimer cross ricocheted off the legs of Allan Clarke to put Leeds 2-0 up. Jones then added his second shortly after, heading home a pinpoint cross from Billy Bremner to send the home crowd wild.

After Eddie Gray found space in the box, Jones secured his hat-trick when Gray found Lorimer, whose shot hit Jones and deflected into the net. Jones then teed up Lorimer to score Leeds’ fifth and complete a rout of the highest order.

A lone goal from Man Utd man Francis Burns meant that six goals were scored in the second half, as Leeds ran riot at Elland Road.
