**Wolves**were looking for respite from their ills with a change of leadership, but things are still gloomy at the club. A 4-1 beatdown at the hands of Man United will do little to lift the mood in the Midlands.
Bruno Fernandes capitalised on a massive error at the back to open the scoring or the guests, who again were pegged back with questionable match management as **Jean-Ricner Bellegarde**levelled.
But the Red Devils decisively showed their quality in the second half. Bryan Mbeumo made the hosts pay for another mistake, [**Mason Mount](https://www.vavel.com/en/football/2025/08/24/premier-league/1231493-we-are-improving-ruben-amorim-feels-his-team-are-on-the-right-track-ahead-of-fulham-clash.html)**got on the scoresheet, and Fernandes finished off the job.
Story of the Match
**Rob Edwards**eagerly awaited the first goal and point of his stint as the leader of Wolves. He would have to achieve that feat without the suspended Joao Gomes, who picked up a costly yellow card against Nottingham Forest in midweek. Ladislav Krejci came in for the Brazilian in the middle of the park, and Ki Jana-Hoever was handed a starting spot instead of Jackson Tchatchoua.
Ruben Amorim was back in the bad books of the press as he put down his foot over the lack of minutes for Kobbie Mainoo. The **England**international remained out of his starting eleven as Bruno Fernandes and **Casemiro**claimed the two midfield spots. Amorim’s only alteration to his selection from the 1-1 draw against West Ham saw Mason Mount replace Joshua Zirkzee in the front three.
There was tension in the air at the Molineux Stadium, and things soon started to get edgier for the hosts. They switched off from a free kick, and Diogo Dalot was free to break in behind their defence. The wing-back was closing in on a goal in a second successive game, but **Sam Johnstone**denied him.
The shot stopper had already palmed a goal bound **Bruno Fernandes**corner kick delivery away from the goal line, and he scrambled across his line to steer away a Bryan Mbeumo volley that followed the Dalot chance. Noussair Mazraoui watched a strike get deflected away from the target, and a late challenge on the Moroccan from Jhon Arias allowed Edwards’ men to benefit from an early breather.
Arias avoided judgement upon the inspection of VAR, but the mood barely brightened at Molineux Stadium. After the first quarter of an hour, fans filtered into the ground from their boycott, bringing their feelings of frustration into the stands. Irate words were hurled at chairman Jeff Shi, and the anger boiled over at the sight of the opening goal of the game as the Red Devils took the advantage.
**Andre**needlessly gave away possession in his half of the field, and **Casemiro**clipped the ball towards Matheus Cunha. The forward passed up on the opportunity to score against his old club, looking for Fernandes with a sideways pass at the top of the box. His teammate slipped, but before Emmanuel Agbadou intervened, the club captain got back up and squeezed a shot past Johnstone.
Cunha and Mount kept putting the pressure on the hosts, but a second strike was not forthcoming. **Man United**had only kept one clean sheet in the Premier League all campaign, and without the security of a bigger buffer, they risked dropping points— even against the team at the basement.
Arias and DavidMoller Wolfe**** missed the mark as they tried to connect with orange shirts in the final third before Jean-Ricner Bellegarde blazed an effort over the crossbar. A handball against Agbadou was not called, and with the momentum on their side, **Wolves**would draw level close to half time.
Players pinged deliveries into the penalty area, and Krejci was inches away from connecting to a cross. Moller Wolfe was alive to the loose ball, and his cutback fell for Bellegarde to turn home. Belief was building in the Midlands, and it was imperative for **Man United**to react with a fast start.
The second half went according to plan. Cunha fired a strike over the target, Mbeumo was rushed by Johnstone off his line, and the team had racked up 16 shots (their Premier League average for a full match) after just 50 minutes. The goal that the guests had been courting soon came their way.
Not for the first time, Man United could spring into space behind the back five. Dalot darted after a through ball, and he baited out Johnstone, laying the ball for Mbeumo to have the easiest of finishes.
Ten minutes later, Amorim’s men had made the three points safe. Fernandes fired a strike from distance without success, but he stayed calm after picking up the rebound. The midfielder clipped a chipped pass into the danger zone, and Mount met the ball with a well-timed run, sweetly volleying a strike beyond Johnstone. With immaculate execution, the Red Devils drove home their superiority.
With nothing to lose, Edwards instructed Mateus Mane, Tolu Arokodare, and Hwang Hee-chan to come onto the pitch. Agbadou soon had a header saved by **Senne Lammens**— the first time that the Belgian shot stopper was called into action. However, the likelihood of a comeback was slim to none.
Mainoo made his entry into the action in the 78th minute as a replacement for Casemiro, creating more reason for the travelling supporters to show their appreciation. To top things off for their team, Man United soon scored a fourth goal. Amad Diallo daggered a strike at the target, and Yerson Mosquera committed a handball. Fernandes fired home from twelve yards to wrap up his brace.
Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu got their minutes on the field, and the visitors were knocking around the ball for fun, turning the turf into their training ground. Meanwhile, the misery compounds for Wolves, who are still winless and have equalled their longest losing streak of eight games in league history.
Fernandes delivered the usual from himself as club captain with two goals and an assist to boot, but big plaudits should go to another attacking midfielder who has been making his mark this season.
Mason Mount capped his performance with a brilliantly taken strike in the second half, but his passing and movement made things tick at the Molineux Stadium. When fit, he continues to show the quality he can contribute to the Red Devils, and he remains a valuable asset for Amorim.
